The six-day-old baby girl was rescued by the area residents after her mother claimed she was missing.
According to a social worker at the St. Claire House for Children- a city orphanage center, the 20-year-old woman gave birth to the baby three days after she came from a village last week.
Betty Thomas told Eye Radio, the unnamed mother was offered accommodation at someone’s home after she claimed she was new in the town.
However, last night, she reportedly woke up yelling that her baby was missing, prompting the neighbors to do a night search when they found the toddler in a latrine.
“They gave her a room and a bed. By surprise, at around 1:00 AM, a boy in the compound upon hearing the woman crying, ran to the father and reported the matter,
“The neighbors came out and went around searching with torches. Someone just went to the toilet and found the babe down in the toilet just sleeping,”
Betty said she and the neighbors took the baby to the doctor to examine the baby’s health condition.
“ So we want a doctor to at least check and I also called people from the center to bring her [baby] clothes and milk.
The woman is said to have been arrested by the police.
Several contacts with the police spokespersons were unsuccessful
