At least two people have been killed and several others injured following violence involving South Sudanese and Sudanese nationals in Boro Medina of Raja County, Western Bahr el Ghazal State.

According to the state police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Santino Uduol Mayen, the incident began on Saturday, June 13, when a South Sudanese motorcycle rider was stabbed by his two Sudanese passengers.

The unnamed rider was transporting two Sudanese traders to a mining site known as “40 Minutes” when he was attacked. The suspects reportedly fled with the motorcycle.

The rider sustained serious injuries and later died while being transported to Raja County Hospital.

The incident triggered tensions within the community, leading to retaliatory attacks against Sudanese nationals living in Boro Medina.

“Following the incident on Sunday, tension emerged within the South Sudanese community resulting in retaliatory attacks against Sudanese nationals residing in Boro Medina. As a result, 15 Sudanese nationals and two South Sudanese nationals sustained injuries,” he explained.

Police said one Sudanese national who was injured during the retaliatory attacks later died before reaching Raja Hospital for treatment.

Mr. Uduol said police and other security forces intervened and managed to contain the situation.

“The police together with other organized forces and security agencies responded and successfully contained the situation. A criminal case has been opened at Raja Police Station against the two suspects and intensive search and investigation efforts are currently underway. Currently, the security situation in Boro Medina is calm and under control,” he said.

Police said investigations are ongoing and efforts are underway to arrest the suspects involved in the initial attack.
