Dr Riek recalls team over 28-state row

Author : | Published: Monday, January 18, 2016

The leader of the SPLM in Opposition, Dr Riek Machar, has recalled 38 members of his advance team in Juba, after a disagreement with the government over the creation of more states.

Last week, the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission asked both sides to negotiate on the matter as a political issue.

The SPLM-IO still holds the view that splitting 10 states to 28 is against the peace agreement and wants the order revoked. The government says the decision is irrevocable.

“The chairman has called the rest of leadership of the bureau who are here now to go and consult with the leadership for two days,” said Dr Dhieu Mathok, senior member of the IO team in Juba. “We will come back on Thursday”.

Meanwhile, a political analyst says the SPLM in Opposition does not have a unified view on the creation of more states.

Dr. James Okuk warns that this could be a problem to the peace agreement:

“It’s very dangerous for IO to divide into two camps. The peace agreement will also become a problem. So let them speak with one voice”.
