The agreement which was signed by President Salva Kiir and Dr Riek Machar in Addis Ababa only two days ago has already been violated.

The government and SPLA in Opposition forces have blamed each other for breaking it hours after it came into effect.

On Friday, President Kiir and Dr. Riek Machar met face-to-face for the first time in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, and signed an agreement.

The agreement stipulates that all fighting stops 24 hours after the signing by the two leaders on Friday night.

Addressing a rally organized by the SPLM at Juba International Airport upon his return from Kenya this afternoon, Kiir accused Machar forces of violating the agreement.

“This morning at 6:30 AM Riek Machar forces attacked our forces at Rubkona in Unity State. They attacked our forces and we repulsed them and they ran away left dead bodies down there that was one case. When it reached 8:20 AM this morning, Riek Machar forces attacked our base at Kilo-Kamsin east of Bentiu capital of Unity State. They fought and they were also repulsed. The same morning at 9:00 AM, they attacked our forces at Mathiang north- east of Nassir. All in all, they were beaten back and they ran away”, he said.

However, the military spokesman of the SPLA-in Opposition, Brigadier-General, Lul Ruai Koang, told Reuters that government forces launched attacks on their base in Unity State and Upper Nile State.

He said government forces attacked their base in Upper Nile just a few hours before the ceasefire deadline.
