The UN Police Commissioner says he has received reports that South Sudan Police were involved in human rights violations during the events which took place on 15th December in Juba.
Dr. Fred Yiga was speaking during a graduation of 196 police officers in Rajaf yesterday.
He said the report is a disturbing one, which accuses the police of arbitrary detention and killings
“As a UN Police Commissioner, I will tell you that I am getting all sorts of reports from all corners of the world, and the most disturbing report is that you have been involved in human rights violations .That is the most disturbing report that the police services have got involved in abuse of human rights of their own citizens. This is a number one report on my desk. You have killed so many people, you, have imprisoned so many people, you have done this, you have done that… and you have done the other. And as the UN police commissioner, you are my friends, there is no point of hiding it. So right now we have a problem of redeeming our image”, the UN Police Commissioner said.
However, the Inspector -General of South Sudan Police, First Lieutenant General, Pieng Deng Kuol, said not all the police were involved in the abuse.
He said some elements from the police were implicated in the report.
“There is no an organized involvement of police, it is that elements of police that have been implicated in the report, which we cannot deny but again…I am sure 100% the police institutions formed investigation committee immediately after the crisis in December. And the committee has submitted its work, except that we have not publicized it, because we cannot do it alone.”
General Pieng said that if there is any policeman found involved in these abuses, they will face the law.
