The United Nations says it has completed investigations into the killing of civilians at the UN base in Malakal in February and will make the findings public soon.

Initial reports from UNMISS and Eastern Nile state government officials suggested that the fighting started between two ethnic communities in the camp, before soldiers outside the camp came and took sides.

In response to the killings at the UN base in Malakal some four months ago, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon formed an inquiry and later an investigation into the incident.

After a visit to Malakal, the UN Undersecretary General, Herve Ladsous, said the results of the investigation will be presented to Mr Ban Ki Moon before they are made public.

However, he said there was tension in Malakal, especially on both sides of the River Nile. Mr Ladsous, who is also the head of peacekeeping operations, spoke at the end of his visit to the country between Friday and yesterday.

According to the Small Arms Survey, at least 40 people were killed and 90 others wounded in the attack.

The finding was almost similar to the outcome of the investigation by representatives of the displaced people in the camp, who said 49 people were killed while more than 20 others were missing.

The Small Arms Survey said about 1,500 shelters were burned while whole sections of a particular community and the Darfuris were not destroyed.
