An activist raised concerns regarding government spending, stating that a lack of resources for the National Elections Commission (NEC) may lead to missed deadlines in June.
The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) Executive Director, Edmund Yakani, spoke to Eye Radio on Saturday, April 18.
He stated that the electoral process faces challenges even if legal frameworks are in place. He noted that without money, the commission cannot perform its tasks for the December 2026 vote.
Yakani identified two dates in June 2026 that are essential for the process: June 22, the deadline for the NEC to publish the final voters’ register and announce readiness for the polls, and June 30, the date the Political Parties Council must release the list of parties eligible to participate.
The CEPO director stated that funding elections is a duty of the government. He reported that the NEC has requested money for essential tasks but has not received the resources.
Yakani stated that the government allocates funds to priorities not related to the election while preparations for the vote remain behind schedule. He warned that the absence of money creates conditions that could delay the process or impact the credibility of the vote.
Yakani urged leaders to follow procedures and reach an agreement on legal amendments. He called on the government to provide the NEC with the resources required to fulfill its mandate and ensure the election occurs as scheduled.
