Inspector General of Police Gen. Saeed Chawul Lom Ayuel has described the promotion of Lt. Gen. Achol Cyer Rehan as a historic milestone for South Sudan’s police service, noting that the elevation of seven other female officers to Brigadier General reflects growing female representation in police leadership.

The promotion, announced by the Ministry of Interior, also saw several other female officers elevated to higher positions, including seven women who moved from the rank of Colonel to Brigadier General.

Police Chief Gen. Saeed Chawul described the move as a historic milestone for the country’s policing system and a significant step toward gender equality within the security sector.

“For the first time in South Sudan’s history, a woman in the police force has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General,” Gen. Saeed said. “This demonstrates growing equality between men and women and highlights the presence of capable women able to assume higher responsibilities.”

Gen. Saeed praised Lt. Gen. Achol Cyer Rehan as an accomplished and experienced officer, noting that she holds a Master’s degree in Law and Security Studies and previously served as a county commissioner in Warrap State.

He expressed confidence in her leadership potential, adding that her recent promotion could mark the beginning of even greater achievements.

“It is not inconceivable that she may one day become the Inspector General of Police in South Sudan,” he said.

The promotions are widely seen as part of broader efforts to strengthen professionalism and inclusivity within the South Sudan Police Service while recognizing the contributions of women in law enforcement.
