The Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly says more than 100 South Sudanese are being detained in Libya, while 55 others are in custody in Kenya.
Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, Joseph Ngere Paciko said a delegation led by lawmaker Mojur Babour recently visited Benghazi and found over 100 South Sudanese in detention.
He said the team worked with local authorities and the South Sudanese consulate to gather information on their cases.
Paciko said parliament will summon the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Interior to explain what the government is doing to help citizens facing legal problems abroad.
The Speaker also revealed that 55 South Sudanese have been arrested in Kenya.
He said Kenyan authorities provided a list of charges, including burglary and theft.
According to Paciko, South Sudan’s ambassador in Kenya is working with police to ensure fair treatment of the detainees and support for those eligible for release.
The issue was raised after lawmakers expressed concern about the challenges faced by South Sudanese living abroad, including students and refugees in Egypt struggling with residency renewals and passport services.
