The Acting Governor of Upper Nile State has called for peace, unity, and the return of displaced families during the Obwa Cultural Day celebrations at the Malakal camp.

Deng Akuei Kak joined the community at the event, held at the former Protection of Civilians site. He stated that celebrations of culture help preserve heritage and rebuild relationships between communities. He noted that these values serve as a foundation for unity in the state.

The Acting Governor stated that the state government is committed to peace through dialogue. This process includes community leaders, women, youth, and traditional authorities. He described culture as a tool for coexistence and commended the Obwa community for maintaining its traditions.

Deng Akuei Kak encouraged residents of the camp to return to their homes in Malakal town and the surrounding areas. He stated that stability allows people to rebuild their lives and return to a normal routine.

During the event, the Acting Governor also expressed condolences to the people of South Sudan and the Colo community following the death of artist Viviana Nyachan on April 14.

Management of the Malakal camp was transferred from the United Nations to the Upper Nile State government on February 13, 2026. The handover involved military, security, and community representatives.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees stated it will continue to provide services to residents in Malakal. Military officials pledged to protect civilians, while youth and community leaders were told to cooperate with authorities to support stability and development in the state.
