US on AU findings

The United States has urged the African Union to work with the United Nations, and the South Sudanese people to determine the mandate, structure, and location of the hybrid court for South Sudan.

Over the weekend, the African Union said the court would be established to try cases of atrocities committed since the beginning of the conflict until the end of the transitional period.

AU leaders said murder, rape, torture, and other inhuman acts were committed against the civilian population.

In a statement, the United States says the court will be vital to ending impunity in South Sudan.

It says the numerous and disturbing reports of abuses and violations by both parties to the conflict underline the need for a credible court to try those most responsible for atrocities.

“The terrible human suffering exacted during South Sudan’s conflict – from ethnically motivated murders, to reprisal killings, to widespread sexual violence – demands nothing less than a full and impartial accounting,” partly read the statement.

The US also welcomes the decision of the African Union to publish the findings of its commission that investigated human rights abuses and violations in the conflict.

The commission was formed in March 2014, but the AU Peace and Security Council decided to keep the findings confidential.

On Wednesday, the ministry of foreign affairs said the AU should delay the publication of the report.

Spokesman Mawien Makol said accountability should come after the implementation of the peace agreement.
