The African Union has granted its Commission of Inquiry three more months to investigate the war crimes in South Sudan.

The resolution was made in a closed door meeting during the summit of the heads of states held in Mlabo, Equatorial Guinea, last week.

During the meeting, the heads of states received a report from the commission on the progress of the investigations into the war crimes committed in South Sudan during the six-month conflict.

In a previous briefing, the AU Commission of Inquiry had requested for an extension of its mandate for it to complete an interim report requested.

The Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mawien Makol, says the government will work together with the commission during the three months extension.

“So, we can be able to come up with one general view of how they can conduct their work here in South Sudan,” said Amb Mawien.

The AU Commission of Inquiry on South Sudan is headed by the former President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo.

It is mandated to investigate crimes committed by both sides to the conflict and recommend measures to stop more violence.
