Governor seeks inquiry into ‘financial fraud’ in football

The Governor of Jubek State says the national government should investigate how the South Sudan football association received more than 400,000 US dollars without the knowledge of the Ministry of Sports.

The board of directors of the association says the funds, reportedly sent to the South Sudan Football Association by the football governing body FIFA, have been transferred to individual accounts.

The directors have suspended their president, Chebur Goch, over allegations of financial fraud.

Governor Augustino Jadalla says national authorities should have been informed about the money.

He spoke at the meeting of the general assembly of the Kator Football club on Saturday.

“SSFA is under the government and ministry of youth and sport and follow up should be there; how FIFA have given you 400, 000 or one million US dollars and the government and the whole ministry doesn’t know about this money,” he said.

“It’s impossible because SSFA is not [working] on their wish. Me, myself, as a governor I have to know from local FA and I have a share or not,” he said.

Chebur has said he will return to Juba and face accountability procedures in relation to the accusation.
