Southern Liech hit by severe food shortage

Author : | Published: Friday, November 11, 2016

Southern Liech says the state is facing serious shortages of food and other humanitarian needs, says the state Minister of Information.

Peter Makuoth said residents of the capital, Leer, are currently surviving on one meal per day due to lack of humanitarian assistance.

Mr Makuoth said insecurity and floods along major roads leading to the town, has affected the supply of commodities; farmers in the state cultivated crops, but were not successful due to the floods.

He told Eye Radio that many residents also fled the town after incidents of attacks by the armed groups in the area.

He said “the humanitarian situation in the state is really very bad at the moment, especially after the crises, because we had a lot of crises, a lot of attacks in the area in September, October and going to November.”

“The citizens do not have something to eat, they don’t have food, and at the same time also we don’t have enough food items available in the market in Leer,” he added, saying the prices of food items in the markets have also shot up.

Mr Makuoth urged the humanitarian organizations to intervene and rescue the situation.
