President Salva Kiir on Monday appealed to the Sudanese military factions to end the two months of deadly fighting and said his government remains committed to resolving the conflict.

President Kiir made the remarks as he met Sudan’s Vice President Malik Agar for the second time in his efforts to persuade Sudan’s Armed Forces and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces battling for power, to negotiate a peaceful settlement.

Vice President Agar reportedly briefed Kiir on the current security situation in his country, and his recent diplomatic tour to Uganda and Kenya to bolster regional efforts for peace.

“General Agar underscored the importance of Africans solutions to Africans problems, calling for harmonization of the Jeddah, African Union, and IGAD initiatives to quickly address the ongoing conflict in Sudan,” reads a statement from Kiir’s office.

The peace talks in Jeddah between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces collapsed on June 3, after the U.S. and Saudi Arabia mediators suspended negotiations over repeated truce violations.

But the Jeddah initiative was already crippled when the Sudanese army pulled out of the negotiations – accusing the RSF of violating the humanitarian ceasefire and failing to implement the commitments it had made during the negotiations.

The RSF, in return, accused the military of violating the cease-fire first.
