The Director General of Traffic Police ordered traffic police officers in Juba to stop the issuing of and demanding for the so-called Driving Assessment Certificates.

The government started issuing the Driving Assessment Certificates to Juba drivers in August 2021, despite protests from motorists.

Traffic police officers used to demand the driving certificate from motorists and then force them to pay for a driving test – should they fail to produce it.

Drivers have decried that officers are exploiting the window for corruption.

On Wednesday, the Director-General of Traffic, Major General Kon John Akot issued a directive annulling all certificates and stopped issuing new Driving Assessment Certificates.

General John said the decision has already come into effect on Monday 27th of March.

“I have instructed the traffic police officers not to intercept any driver who does not have an evaluation driver’s license,” he told journalists in his office on Wednesday.

“So I would like to say to the traffic officer that from today not to object to any national or foreign person who does not have an evaluation driver’s license. They don’t intercept him and let him pass freely.”
