At least 400 famers have been registered in Yambio to receive seeds and agriculture tools ahead of the rainy season, a local organization in Western Equatoria has said.

The registration which is carried out by the Catholic Organization for Development and Peace [CODEP] is aimed at improving agriculture production in the state.

The 400 hundred farmers are from five different parishes in Yambio.

The registration of the farmers is going to be carried out in other counties and parishes as well.

CODEP has been rendering humanitarian activities to the vulnerable people in the area.

It also supports agriculture activities in line with its vision of building sustainable agriculture activities in the diocese and the state at large.

The Director of CODEP, Father Charles Mbkoyo says the project was meant to build the capacity of the farmers in order to improve sustainable agriculture.

He adds that sustainable agriculture is for the livelihood of farmers to grow food for themselves.

“Our organization called CODEP – a Catholic Organization For Development and Peace sent some staff to five locations to register our farmers so that they can receive seeds and tools,” Father Mbkoyo told Eye Radio from Yambio.

“We are working in partnership with FAO to improve Agriculture so that they can produce food for themselves, especially at this time that people are in need of food.

“Our target was four hundred but there were so many farmers more than that number but those who received the card were four hundred.”

Father Mbikoyo further calls on the entire people of western Equatoria and South Sudan to embark on Agriculture in order to eliminate hunger.

“We are appealing to the people of this state to embark on agriculture. When we produce the food we shall be the richest,” Father Mbikoyo said.

“Life is only found in the garden, food is only found in the garden, it is where we find food and then we take it to the market if we don’t have food in the garden then what you take it to the market.

“I am encouraging all to consider agriculture to plant to produce food so that this year we don’t invite hunger so that the IDPs have something to eat. That is my message to let us embark on farming.”

The registration which was launched on Monday is supported by the Food Agriculture Organization.
