Speaker Jemma Nunu has told the bi-annual Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly in Angola that the 2018 peace agreement is on track and the country is ready to hold elections in 2024.

The five-day 147th assembly in Angola’s capital Luanda is being held under the theme; ‘Parliamentary action for peace, justice and strong institutions,’ began on Monday and will conclude on Friday.

It aims to ensure nations’ public institutions become increasingly effective, accountable, and representative in the face of multifaceted challenges facing the world.

Addressing the Speakers’ gathering, Right Honorable Nunu Kumba said the August House has amended several legislations that promote transparency and accountability.

She says South Sudan’s transitional parliament has for the past two years amended most of the security laws to confirm with the security reform programs stipulated in the 2018 peace agreement.

Nunu also said the August House enacted several legislations that promote transparency and accountability in public institutions to enhance people’s confidence in the government.

She added that the implementation of the peace agreement is on track – while citing the enactment of the Public Finance and Accountability Act, Anti-corruption Act, Constitution-making Process Act, the Elections Act, and the Political Parties Act.

“In the last two years, the parliament has amended most of the security laws to conform with the security reform program stipulated in the peace agreement,” Nunu said.

“The parliament has enacted several pieces of legislation that promote transparency and accountability in public institutions to enhance people’s confidence in the people’s parliament and the executive,” she said.

“The laws include the Public Finance and Accountability Act, Anti-corruption Act, Constitution Making Process Act, the Election Act, Political Parties Act and other related legislation.”

Speaker Nunu also told the Parliamentary Union Assembly that President Salva Kiir is committed to holding elections in 2024 to allow the citizens to choose their leaders who will deliver services to them.

“I wish to inform this August audience that the implementation of the peace agreement is on track. The government and our president, Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit is committed to holding elections at the end of the transitional period in 2024,” Nunu said.

“Elections serve as the only mechanism that can allow the people of South Sudan to choose their leaders and representatives who will deliver services that reflect their needs and enhance trust and confidence building,” she said.
