Stop targeting aid workers, forces urged

Author : | Published: Tuesday, August 19, 2014

Humanitarian agencies have called on all parties to the conflict to immediately stop targeting aid workers.

Save the Children says delegates of 14 major humanitarian aid organizations visited Maban County yesterday and condemned the killing of five South Sudanese aid workers this month.

The agencies say that attacks on humanitarian workers obstruct the delivery of assistance to people in need.

They also called for respect of international humanitarian law and for full humanitarian access.

The agencies expressed these concerns to government officials in a meeting in Maban.

The Assistant Commissioner for Refugee’s Affairs in the area, Andrea Maya, told Eye Radio that the meeting was to look into the return of the aid workers who were evacuated from the area this month.

He said the evacuation affected the humanitarian operation in the county.

“So, they were looking, considering and trying to find if the situation on the ground is good so that we consider the return of the rest of the staff,” he said.

I think the meeting was good because the county commissioner managed to brief them about the situation on the ground”
