Women conference calls for gender parity in power

The International Women’s Conference has recommended increased participation of women in decision-making institutional positions including in legal and policy reforms.

During the conclusion of the three-day conference in Juba, the women deliberated on key issues affecting their growth and empowerment in the country.

Participants deliberated on actions and strategies to strengthen women’s participation in leadership, decision-making, and ways to safeguard the rights of young women.

The conference also recommended the utilization of existing normative framework to achieve gender equality. This includes monitoring the implementation of this commitments to ensure that women are able to fill their place in decision making positions.

The consultation also called on both donors and government to support women in the next 24 months ahead of the upcoming general election, as their participation will need technical and financial support.

Betty Kaari Murungi is a Human Rights Activist and an International Consultant for the conference, said the media is important in shaping women’s narratives and stories.

“The media is the key agent to change social views of women and awareness raising, shaping national discussed on women representation and positive portray of women,” she said.

“In addition to this, building the support in solidarity of male allies is critical in the attainment of gender equality.”

“Civil society organization at both national and community level is critical in movement building, shaping agenda and mobilizing and organizing the nation in advocacy, in monitoring and following up on implementation of key aspects on both on reform laws but also providing technical capacity in to the women movements.”

The conference was organized by the Vice President for Gender and Youth Cluster Rebecca Nyadeng de Mabior.

It presented an opportunity for women to share their experiences, deepen their understanding in regional and international networks.
