Authorities in Western Equatoria State have warned of outbreak of diseases among IDPs who fled a fighting in Yambio last week.

The displaced, mainly women and children, sought refuge at the compound of the humanitarian organization, ADRA, after clashes between the SPLA and the arrow boys. The cause of the fighting is unclear.

The State Minister of Gender, Margret Fozia says they have now registered almost 6,000 of the IDPs in the NGO premises in the town.

She told Eye Radio that the health situation of displaced people may worsen as there are new arrivals each day.

“Our fear is that as people are sleeping outside children, could catch malaria and all other kinds of diseases,” Ms Fozia told Eye Radio.

She added that some IDPs who attempted to go back to their homes realized that their properties were looted and homes burned to ashes.
