The government of Western Bahr el Ghazal has officially closed the Protection of Civilians (PoC) site in Wau following the relocation of internally displaced persons to newly constructed housing units in Khor Malang.

Governor Sharif Daniel Sharif said the move represents a significant step toward transitioning displaced families into more stable and permanent living conditions.

The Wau PoC site was originally established by the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) during the civil war to shelter civilians fleeing violence, and has hosted thousands over the years.

According to the governor, the state government will continue collaborating with humanitarian partners to ensure access to basic services for those resettled. He also commended UNMISS for its role in maintaining peace and providing protection throughout the conflict.

Sharif urged residents in Khor Malang to take responsibility for maintaining the new housing units and to use them properly.

Authorities say the closure is part of broader national efforts to transition people out of protection sites and support long-term recovery and resettlement.
