The governor of Warrap State is calling for the conduct of general disarmament to resolve inter-communal conflicts in the state.

Engineer Manhiem Bol Malek made the remarks during the recently concluded Luanjang Peace Conference in Tonj East County.

The state information minister William Wol Mayom said the peace conference is meant to unite the people of Luanjang and cement peace with their neighbors.

“He (Governor Manhiem) has said disarmament must take its cause and people should be disarmed,” said the information minister.

Manhiem also called on local authorities to give security organs the power to apprehend suspected criminals without getting an arrest warrant.

“He has also directed the local authorities and the security organs to apprehend the culprits, those who usually take laws into their hands without waiting for the court or passing the issue to the court.”

The governor also suggested a total ban on alcohol consumption in the state, as well as criminalization of cattle theft and raiding.

According to reports, sub-national violence in South Sudan remains the biggest insecurity threat since the signing of the revitalized agreement in 2018.

The government says civilians are well equipped than the security forces making it difficult for law enforcement agencies to maintain peace across the country.
