The US ambassador to South Sudan is urging the government and the SPLM-in Opposition to recommit themselves to urgently resolving the crisis in the country.

Last week, U.S President, Barrack Obama signed an order clearing the way for possible sanctions against individuals seen to be obstructing the peace process in South Sudan.

Ambassador Susan Page told Eye Radio from Washington DC that the sanctions would target those in the government, in the SPLM-in Opposition and anyone hindering the peace process.

“The executive order that was signed by President Obama is to send the clear message that those who threaten the peace, the security stability of South Sudan, or those who obstruct the peace process, those who target UN peace keepers all will be responsible for human abuses and atrocities will not be supported by the US and they will run the risk of sanction,” said Ambassador Page.

“This is both for the government of South Sudan and as well as Riak Machar’s rebel s and we are encouraging both sides to engage fully and comprehensively on the peace process by IGAD so that they can resolve the conflict.”

Ambassador Page also said the sanctions may include freezing individual financial accounts or travel restrictions.

Ambassador Susan Page said the order now grants authority to the U.S Department of Treasury and U.S State Department to identify those who will likely face sanctions.

Last week, the government of South Sudan said it was still studying the statement from the White House before making any official response.
