Lakes State revenue authority has disclosed that it collected over 80 million South Sudanese Pounds in the two months.

The Information Minister, William Kwoji says the non-oil revenue was collected in the months of January and February 2022.

He stated that the money was collected from auctioning livestock, sales of timbers, collection from river ports, licenses and other businesses.

“The revenue authority has been established and they were tasked with the responsibility of collection of taxes from our local resources and centralizing them in one account,” Kwoji told Eye Radio on Tuesday.

“It was early this year that they started their work and that is what they have done. They report 80, 451, 418 pounds in two months.

“Today [Tuesday] the governor asked the council to help him in how to allocate this money for use at the government level.

“Currently, there were a lot of challenges, no money was coming from the national government and we will not continue wondering and waiting whether the money is coming or not.

“We have to utilize our time and whatever effort we have out of our resources, so it has to be properly collected, properly allocated for government operations, especially security and service delivery.”

Lakes state becomes the only state to disclose the amount of revenue collected.

Last year, the government of Lakes State appointed Honorable Mayok Marial as the commissioner for the state revenue authority.

Until then, Lakes like most states in the country used a decentralized system of tax collection.

Chapter four of the revitalized agreement provides that the unity government establishes a high level competent and effective oversight mechanism that shall control revenue collection, budgeting, allocation and expenditures.

It also says the wealth of South Sudan shall be shared equitably to enable each level of the government to discharge functions.
