UNMISS denies ‘fencing’ SPLA bases

UNMISS has denied media reports that it is fencing SPLA bases in various locations to prevent SPLA troops from abandoning their positions.

Nyamile.com website had reported that the fences were to protect SPLA troops in Nasir, Malakal, Ayod, Bentiu, Renk and other locations in case of attacks.

In a statement, UNMISS said the media report is untrue, stating that the Nyamile.com website favors the opposition forces.

“UNMISS categorically denies these allegations and notes that, among other inaccuracies contained in the report, there are no Rwandan peacekeepers deployed in Renk, Nasir or Bentiu as claimed in the article,” read the statement.

There is a “growing tendency by individuals opposed to the efforts to restore peace in South Sudan to resort to malicious propaganda intended to exacerbate tensions and conflict”.

UNMISS says it has consistently maintained a strict impartiality in the ongoing conflict in South Sudan in line with its mandate.
