Unity State Finance Minister on Monday appealed for 30 days to prepare the state’s financial year budget while he appeared in parliament to respond to a summon about the budget delays.

Minister Malual Tap was first summoned on August 18, 2023, but he failed to present himself before the state legislature.

He finally decided to appear before the lawmakers after receiving a second summon with threats of impeachment last Wednesday.

Mr Tap, who has served in the position since 2013, acknowledged the role of parliament in bolstering the governance system.

He apologized for failing to appear on time adding that he did not receive the letter in time.

Addressing the lawmakers, the minister appealed for one month to gather all necessary data and consult with relevant stakeholders.

“Right Honorable Speaker, considering the significance and magnitude of presenting the 2023-2024 budget which serves as the very foundation of Unity State fiscal planning and developmental vision,

“I humbly request this esteemed August House for 30 working days to adequately prepare and executive a comprehensive budget presentation in front of this House,” Tap said.

“This extension will ensure that I gather all necessary facts, figures, and proposals for the formulation of a robust and inclusive budget. Additionally, it will allow me to take into account the various inputs of stakeholders.”

The state has operated for nearly ten years without a functioning parliament to approve a budget following the outbreak of conflict in 2013.

Minister Malual admitted that throughout the years of instability, the state budget was being approved annually by the governor through executive orders.
