UNICEF child reporters in Juba are calling on youth in South Sudan to stop buying guns and rather promote peace in the Country.

Their call comes as South Sudan joins the rest of the globe to celebrate the International Day of Peace.

The UN General Assembly universally voted to designate the day for strengthening the ideals of peace, through observing 24 hours of non-violence and cease-fire.

Child reporter Ihuro Joseph says the youth should shun purchasing weapons in the communities but become peace ambassadors.

“If we bring our ideas together, we can be able to promote peace in South Sudan. We should engage in peace efforts and decision-making.

“We should not purchase weapons in communities and engage in violence … let us all be ambassadors of peace because the things we do now if they are negative, will affect our future negatively.”

On her part, UNICEF Reporter Mary Adut is urging chiefs to engage youth in dialogue and activities that promote peace.

“Our chiefs have a role to play, they[chiefs] should bring youths from various communities and talk to them.

They should also engage them in activities such as sporting activities that will help them forget the bad things they have done. In this way, everyone will be able to live in harmony and peace will prevail after that”.

This year’s International Day of Peace global theme is “Actions for Peace: Our Ambition for the Global Goals” and South Sudan’s chosen theme is “Me and You for Peace in South Sudan”.
