The U.S. Ambassador to South Sudan has called on the unity government to improve the security situation in Upper Nile state following fighting between armed groups in the area.

Ambassador Michael J. Adler made the remarks during his first visit to Malakal in Upper Nile State on Thursday last week.

On Tuesday, the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs stated in a statement that about 8,000 civilians have been displaced in Fashoda County of Upper Nile by the violence.

In a statement sent to Eye Radio newsroom, the U.S diplomat called on the government of South Sudan to improve security conditions in Upper Nile state.

He also reaffirmed the U.S. government’s support to the people of South Sudan.

“He reaffirmed U.S. support for South Sudan’s people and noted the need for the South Sudanese Government to improve security conditions in Upper Nile to alleviate human suffering and so that the most vulnerable communities can receive the aid and support they need.” Amb. Adler stated in a statement.

While in Malakal, the U.S diplomat visited the Protection of Civilians site where he met with residents, USAID implementing partners, and UNMISS personnel.

Ambassador Adler also visited medical facilities and a food warehouse supported by U.S. assistance and discussed efforts to provide aid to those displaced by severe subnational violence in Upper Nile and sustained multi-year flooding.

The Ambassador also visited sites where victims of sexual exploitation and gender-based violence receive assistance and are learning income-generating skills.
