Twitter users have voted in favor of Elon Musk stepping down as the organization’s chief executive after the billionaire ran a poll about his role on the platform.

Musk had asked over a hundred million of his Twitter followers whether he should quit.

A total of 17.5 million users voted on Monday – with 57.5% voted “yes” for him to stand down, while 42.5% voted that he should not resign.

Elon Musk, who bought Twitter for $44bn, said before the poll closed that he would abide by the result.

However, since the polls closed, Musk is yet to comment.

The BBC understands that even if he were to resign as chief executive, he would remain as Twitter’s owner.

Musk was pictured at the World Cup final in Qatar next to Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner on Sunday.
