Local chiefs from Twic County of Warrap State have agreed to a proposal for a peace dialogue with their counterparts in neighboring Abyei, to end the recurrent bloodshed between the two communities.

This comes after the Vice President for Service Cluster Hussein Abdalbagi Akol visited Wunrok of Twic County last week.

Warrap State Information Minister William Wol Mayom said Vice President Akol visited Twic County to calm communal tension in the wake of renewed violence.

He reportedly appealed to the local chiefs and communities to cease hostilities and embrace peaceful coexistence.

Minister Mayom added that the peace talks would soon begin under the auspice of the Office of the Vice President.

“In that meeting, he (Abdelbagi) called the executive chiefs, local leaders, and politicians of the area to open roads and accept the peace dialogue that would be organized soon.”

“And in response, all the local chiefs agreed on the directives from the vice president as well as H.E. the governor of Warrap State, Brig. Eng. Manhiem Bol Malek.”

However, the information official didn’t mention the date and location of the planned conference.

Deadly conflicts, believed to be triggered by a land dispute between the Ngok and Twic Dinka have killed dozens of people since the beginning of last year.

An investigation committee formed by the national government to find the root cause of the Aneet conflict has named prominent politicians as fueling the violence.
