Three Western countries are calling on South Sudan’s leaders to focus on meeting their commitments to completing the transitional period and ushering in a permanent, elected government acceptable to the people of South Sudan.

The US, Norway, and UK made the remarks at a meeting of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission on Thursday.

The Troika nations said time is flying despite President Kiir statement on Monday that there would be no more extensions and elections would be held as scheduled.

They said for the transitional government to match the President’s words, there must be tangible action to complete the constitution making and hold credible elections.

In a joint statement read by Michael J. Adler, the US ambassador to South Sudan, Troika said the peace agreement is not progressing with the necessary political will despite the assurance by the government after extending the transitional period.

“The Troika is looking to the transitional government to take concrete actions, propelled by a real and determined sense of urgency. Statements of intent must be quickly transformed into real world deliverables,” says the joint statement.

The US, Norway and the UK also renewed their call for the government to hold accountable, those who incite violence and engage in intimidation to meet their own political aims and objectives.

They warned such acts are detrimental to the well-being of the people of South Sudan.

The Troika further added that they will view the manner and the speed with which the parties resolve the current issue as an indication of their political will to achieve to achieve lasting peace for the South Sudanese people.
