The Troika countries and European Union released a joint statement Friday – expressing deep concern about the escalation of violence in Upper Nile State and parts of Jonglei State.

The Western countries say the reports of killings, destruction of livelihoods, and the perpetration of sexual violence are horrifying and cannot go unaddressed.

According to local authorities in Upper Nile State, attacks by armed militia groups – especially on civilians have left hundreds killed and around 50,000 displaced.

In a press statement released by the U.S. Department of State, the Troika and the EU say the unity government bears responsibility for the escalation of violence and primary responsibility to end it.

The Troika and EU statement called on South Sudan’s transitional leaders to act urgently to end the violence and protect civilians.

“It is clear that South Sudan’s transitional leaders bear a share of the responsibility for the escalation of this violence, and primary responsibility for ending it,” reads the statement.

“We call on all South Sudanese authorities to allow and facilitate the safe access and delivery of humanitarian assistance to Upper Nile and Jonglei State.”

The Troika and EU also called on authorities to ensure that access to humanitarian assistance for the 9.4 million needy people in the country remains unhindered.

The West warns that lack of action could lead to the loss of more civilian lives and a worsening humanitarian situation.

They further called on all sides to abide by the conditions set out in the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement.

They added that an enduring, nationwide peace is the only way to address South Sudan’s appalling human rights and humanitarian situation.
