Three people have been killed and two others injured in a suspected revenge attack in Tonj North County of Warrap State, following the killing of a university student in Juba linked to a clan dispute.

The deceased, identified as Ring Mawien Manyang, was a final year student at the University of Juba, School of Applied and Industrial Science, Department of Meteorology.

He was allegedly attacked at his residence a day after a misunderstanding erupted between clan members at a football pitch.

He was later rushed to hospital in critical condition and remained unconscious for two weeks before he later died.

According to reports, the violence initially broke out during a football match involving supporters and players, before escalating into broader communal clashes the following morning, during which the late Ring was allegedly attacked.

Speaking to Eye Radio this morning, Warrap State Minister of Information Wol Mayom confirmed that relatives of the deceased allegedly took the law into their own hands and attacked the family of the suspected assailant.

“Yes, true. Sadly, we have also received the same sad news in Juba when the incident erupted between the football players. And of course, the match was organized by Tonj North Peace Tournament in Juba and the circumstances that has triggered the violence which led to the injury of the decease not yet established or investigated,” he explained.

Mayom said three people were reportedly killed in the revenge attack, while two others, including a woman, sustained injuries.

“…after the incident happened in Juba, the relatives of the decease at home in Alabek heard the incident and they took law into their own hands by actually taking revenge against the relatives of the suspected killer. However, in the incident three people are reported killed and 2 others sustained gunshots including a woman,” he said.

He further stated that state security forces had intervened and the situation had since been contained.
