US-based rights activist on hunger strike

A South Sudanese human rights activist is on hunger strike in front of the White House in the US, calling on President Barack Obama’s administration to help bring peace to South Sudan.

Simon Aban Deng has American citizenship. He says that he has been on strike for the last seven days without food.

Mr. Deng says America is the one which helped South Sudan attain independence and should now help in restoring peace in the country.

Mr. Deng told Eye Radio that he raised these concerns in a letter he wrote to Barack Obama.

“I want the President to take the lead of bringing peace among ourselves,” Mr Deng said.

He said many agreements on peace that have been signed under the IGAD supervision were not honored by the warring parties.

“I’m in front of the White House asking the leader of America that the baby you brought to the world is sick and I want you to come and rescue that child.”

Mr. Deng urged South Sudanese leaders to work together to stop the suffering of the people.

For the last two weeks, fighting between opposition forces and the SPLA has been going on, particularly in Unity and Upper Nile states.

UN says over 300,000 displaced women and children are in dire need of humanitarian aid – food, shelter and medical supplies – after humanitarian groups suspended operations due to the increased fighting.

Deng said he won’t eat anything until the Obama Administration takes an action against the leaders of the warring parties.
