Sudan’s military junta has recalled its ambassador to Kenya in protest against Nairobi’s recent official hosting of paramilitary Rapid Support Force (RSF) leader General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that it had recalled Ambassador Kamal Jubbara for consultation in light of the “official” treatment accorded to General Hemetti.

Kenya’s President William Ruto on Wednesday held talks with the Rapid Support Force Leader, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo in the capital Nairobi.

Mr. Ruto said in a press statement he appreciates the head of RSF for his effort to end the conflict in Sudan through dialogue.

Meanwhile, Sudan’s Foreign Minister Ali Al-Sadiq condemned Kenya for failing to acknowledge the “terrible abuses” committed by the RSF, according to a statement seen on Sudan News Agency.

Al-Sadiq cited alleged destruction of infrastructure, the country’s capabilities, and civilians’ property.

He said that the consultations with the ambassador would explore all possible avenues regarding the future of Sudan’s relations with “Kenya, which has been accused of supporting the rebellion in Sudan, hosting its leaders and supporters, and conspiring with hostile regional powers against Sudan”.

Power wrangle between Sudan’s de facto leader General Abdal Fattah Al Burhan and RSF commander General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo plunged the country in deadly conflict in April 15, 2023.

According to the United Nations, the conflict has resulted in the loss of at least 12,000 lives, with more than 33,000 people sustaining injuries.

Dagalo’s visit to Nairobi is part of a broader regional tour that has seen him engage with leaders in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Uganda in recent weeks. He is currently in South Africa.
