Upper Nile State Information Minister Peter Ngwojo Akwiny has confirmed ongoing fighting between SSPDF and SPLA-IO forces in the Wij-Panyikang area of Panyikang County, Upper Nile State.
His statement follows social media footage posted by forces believed to be aligned with SPLA-IO claiming control of the area.
Speaking to Eye Radio, Ngwojo said government forces remain on the ground despite the claims circulating online.
“We are in contact with our forces in the area. The situation does not indicate that IO is fully controlling the region, despite the videos they posted.”
He said the footage does not reflect the full situation on the ground.
“These videos only cover certain areas, but our forces remain present throughout. There was fighting, but SSPDF forces are still on the ground. I spoke with the commissioner this morning, and there is movement happening they are trying to take control of certain areas. However, our forces are repelling them.”
Ngwojo said Wij-Panyikang is a strategic area linking Upper Nile State, Ruweng Administrative Area, and South Kordofan.
