Schoolgirls drop out over forced marriage in Twic East

Author : | Published: Monday, April 13, 2015

Girls in Twic East, Jonglei, are dropping out of school in the area due to early and forced marriages, the county commissioner has said.

Dau Akoi Jurkuch made the remark at a workshop on gender-based violence, human rights, and forced and early marriages over the week.

However, Mr Akoi did not specify how many girls have dropped out of school this year.

Participants at the two-day workshop resolved that awareness campaigns should be carried out in the villages.

“We found out that rape is happening. You should know where you can report it,” Mr Akoi told the participants.

“So, if there is a case of raping appearing in the community, where do you go? You go to the police and then from there you can go to the court.”
