Rumbek school students stage protest over lack of enough teachers

Students at Rumbek National Secondary School have gone on strike over claims that they don’t have enough teachers.

It’s unclear how many teachers are now in the school, but the students say most of them have been sacked under different and unclear circumstances.

The students organized a peaceful protest, but they clashed in the process, injuring two.

The minister of education, Dut Makoi, said some students wanted the head master leave.

He told Eye Radio that relatives of the headmaster among the students tried to protect him, resulting in the clash, in which the students fought with sticks.

Mr Dut admitted that there is shortage of teachers but blamed it on the national ministry of education in Juba.

“The national ministry of education decided to transfer about 15 teachers from Rumbek National Secondary School, and when we asked them, they said some of these teachers requested a transfer because of insecurity in the area,” he said.

“But the real problem is that there was no substitution done. They were supposed to be substituted by other teachers who can go and teach there because it is one of the national secondary schools in the country.”

Mr Dut also said the national ministry of education also stopped the food it was giving the school over the last six months.
