The Greater Pibor Administrative Area Parliamentary Caucus has called on the Council of States to take the lead in establishing a fact-finding committee to investigate the killing of the Kapoeta East Caretaker Commissioner.

The call follows allegations that Murle youth from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area were responsible for the incident that led to the death of the caretaker commissioner.

Addressing reporters at the Transitional National Legislative Assembly headquarters, Laworyen Ibon Korlem, Chairperson of the Pibor Administrative Area Parliamentary Caucus, expressed sorrow over the incident and called for an investigation.

“In light of recent events, we are calling on the national government to establish a fact-finding committee to visit the Kessengor area and thoroughly investigate what has occurred.,” the lawmaker said.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a government official and believe that such incidents should not happen. The Council of States should take the lead in forming this fact-finding committee to ensure transparency and justice,” he added.

During the same briefing, Deputy Chairperson of the caucus, Zuagin Racho Baiko, rejected reports suggesting that the caretaker commissioner was not killed in an ambush.

He said there was an exchange of gunfire between community members and soldiers accompanying the late caretaker commissioner.

“The incident took place in Boma County, within the Greater Pibor Administrative Area. Secondly, the caretaker commissioner was not killed in an ambush; he was killed in Kessengor Payam by members of the local community.

“There was an exchange of fire between the community and the soldiers accompanying the late caretaker commissioner of Kapoeta East County,” he clarified.

For her part, Bonguot Amum Okiech, a member of the caucus in the National Transitional Legislative Assembly, called for peaceful dialogue to resolve disputes between the Greater Pibor Administrative Area and Eastern Equatoria State.

“If there are issues or conflicts, they should be discussed peacefully here, rather than people leaving and dying like this, as happened to the commissioner,” she said.

Authorities say the body of Caretaker Commissioner Lowosio Stephan has been recovered following the attack in Kessengor Payam.

However, no arrests have been made so far.
