The African Union High Representative for South Sudan, Jakaya Kikwete, is set to visit South Sudan, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The ministry said preparations for the visit were discussed during a meeting between Foreign Affairs Minister James Pitia Morgan and the Deputy Head of the African Union Mission in South Sudan, Prosper N. Addo, in Juba.

The discussions focused on coordination ahead of the visit and the African Union’s support to South Sudan’s electoral preparations and democratic governance processes.

According to a statement published on the ministry’s Facebook page, “The Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, James Pitia Morgan, has convened with the Deputy Head the African Union mission in South Sudan, Prosper N. Addo, in Juba regarding the ongoing engagements and preparations for the forthcoming visit of Jakaya Kikwete, the African Union High Representative for South Sudan.”

The statement added that the visit is expected to focus on consultations on the African Union’s support to election preparations and democratic governance in the country.

Minister Morgan welcomed the planned visit and commended the African Union for its continued support to peacebuilding and democratic development in South Sudan.

No specific date for the visit was provided.

However, the anticipated visit comes weeks after the AU envoy had met and held consultation with hold out groups in Arusha, Tanzania.
