Peter Gatdet ‘loses confidence’ in Dr Riek

Major-General Peter Gatdet says he has lost confidence in the leader of the SPLM in Opposition, Dr Riek Machar.

This comes less than a month after Dr Riek removed him as the deputy chief of general staff for operations.

In a statement, Maj-Gen Gatdet says Dr Riek has mismanaged and failed to unite the movement.

He says Dr Riek is no longer the leader of the SPLM in Opposition and that a statement would be issued soon on the leadership of the forces.

Maj-Gen Gatdet, one of the six military leaders the UN sanctioned in July, has also rejected any peace agreement that would include Dr Riek and President Salva Kiir in the transitional government.

“The two leaders have become a symbol of hate and conflict and are obstacles to peace as both leaders wrangle over who should lead,” partly read the statement.

He says his forces will not respect any peace signed between Dr Riek and the government.

Maj-Gen Gatdet also says the reunification of the SPLM through the Arusha Agreement would take the country back to the same situation that resulted into the crisis.

“It confirms return to status quo that plunged the county to the current civil war triggered off by Juba December 2013 massacres.”

He claims to be issuing the statement with other generals.

Maj-Gen Gatdet’s position also comes as negotiators discuss a proposed Compromise Agreement in Addis Ababa.

However, the SPLM in Opposition has denied any major split in their ranks. They told the media that the position paper is only for disgruntled generals who have removed from their leadership positions.
