A peace deal monitoring committee has been formed in Yambio as required by the agreement between an armed group and the government in the area.

The agreement was signed on in April this year in Yambio, between the government and a vigilante group known as the South Sudan National Liberation Movement, SSNLM.

The SSNLM is one of several armed groups operating in the Yambio area led by ex-SPLA officers from different counties of Western Equatoria, the SSNLM signed a preliminary peace deal with the government in November last year.
The agreement provides that, after 60 days of the signature, immediately a peace monitoring committee should be formed.

As per the peace deal to end hostilities in the region, the state government will help offer the former vigilante group professional military training before it is integrated into the national army.

The committee will oversee such a training, which is expected to commence soon.

“So they will be the ones to see that these youths are all in one place for training, they will be the one to see to it that reconciliations going on…,” said Daniel Badabgu, Yambio Town Mayor.
