The national parliament has unanimously passed into law the 2023 South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission Amendment Bill.

The legislation was passed without a vote in the 650-member parliament.

The Act is crucial in ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public funds.

It has maintained the 5-year tenure of the Chairperson, Deputy and Members of the Commission that is subject to renewal.

The law also mandated the anti-graft body to require constitutional post holders to deliver their declarations in writing before assuming office.

The declarations shall include the income, assets and liabilities of their spouses and children.

The Act further stipulates that offences shall be tried by special courts designated by the Chief Justice.

The bill was unanimously passed with observations and recommendations in a Wednesday, October 4, parliamentary sitting chaired by Deputy Speaker Oyet Nathaniel.

“In accordance with our regulations, we have passed the bill,” RTNLA Deputy Speaker Oyet Nathaniel told lawmakers.

“The South Sudan Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, Amendment Bill 2023 is therefore passed in totality with all the observations and recommendations by the August House,” he said.

During the deliberations, many lawmakers raised concerns about the prevalence of corruption in the country and recommended tough measures to shun the vice.
