The spokesperson of the Transitional National Legislative Assembly said the lawmakers are waiting for the office of President Kiir to set a date for reopening the August House.

The national lawmakers went on recess in mid-December 2023, and were expected to return to sittings in the first week of the February.

The customary protocol dictates that when the parliament goes on recess, it must be reopened by the President.

According to John Agany, a message was conveyed to the office of the President, and they are awaiting confirmation of the date for the reopening to take place.

“You know that when the parliament goes for a recess, it is to be opened by the president. And it was communicated to the His Excellency the president and he was in the AU summit in Addis Ababa,” Agany said.

“So, we are waiting for him, the communication has already been done and we are waiting for him to confirm the date for opening. You know when people go for recess, whether it is short or long, when we come back, he (Kiir) has to open it.”

The lawmakers are expected to deliberate and pass laws including a supplementary budget concerning the electoral institution among others.
