At least 20 school children have reportedly tested positive for coronavirus in Nimule town, Eastern Equatoria State.
Health officials say the cases were detected last week among 120 people.
According to Dr. Angelo Guop, chief of operations at the Emergency Unit on Coronavirus, most of the cases are from one school.
He declined to mention the name of the school, but said the unnamed institution has been shut down to allow for investigations to take place and prevent the virus from spreading.
“One of the things we are going to look at is how the infection, prevention, and control quid lines were put in place,” Dr. Guop told Eye Radio.
He stated that arrangements are now being made to dispatch a response team to assess the school and respond to the situation immediately.
The cases in Nimule were detected after the recent centenary celebrations in Loa Parish, a week ago.
South Sudan’s cumulative number of cases has reached 11, 310.
The number of people who have died from the coronavirus remains at 120.
