A mobile court at Juba Central Prison has sentenced a 50-year-old man to death by hanging for killing someone at the Mangala displaced persons’ camp in 2022.

The presiding Judge Joshua Ladu Santo found Deng Riek Garang guilty of murdering 45-year-old Chol Deng Angui at Mangala Internally Displaced Persons’ Camp in April last year.

According to a court order obtained by Eye Radio, convict Riek fatally shot the victim.

The investigation revealed that he killed Deng, following a land dispute within the camp.

Judge Lado said he will now send the court verdict file to the supreme court for confirmation.

The latest death sentence comes weeks after the Council of Ministers reiterated its rejection of the United Nations Human Rights Council’s recommendation to the government of South Sudan to have the death penalty abolished in the country.

In January last year, the Universal Periodic Review Working Group of the United Nations conducted the 40th session to examine South Sudan’s human rights record.

During the review, the government of Iceland appealed to the South Sudan government to abolish the death penalty among other recommendations.

However, Minister Makuei said the government decided to maintain the death penalty during the cabinet meeting two weeks ago.
