JUBA, South Sudan — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has denied reports that South Sudan’s Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya, has been closed, saying a temporary technical problem affected some of its operations.

In a press statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry said the Nairobi embassy remains operational and that efforts are underway to resolve the technical issue.

“The Embassy in Nairobi has not closed. A temporary technical issue affected some of its operations, and the matter is being resolved,” the Ministry said.

The clarification follows media reports claiming that the South Sudanese diplomatic mission in Nairobi had been shut down.

Media reports on Wednesday had it that the embassy in Nairobi’s Kilimani area had been closed, citing embassy staff and South Sudanese residents who visited the mission.

The Foreign Ministry, however, rejected the reports, saying South Sudan’s diplomatic missions abroad remain operational.

“Reports alleging the closure of other South Sudanese embassies are also incorrect,” the statement said.

According to the Ministry, South Sudan’s diplomatic missions abroad “remain operational and continue to discharge their diplomatic functions.”

The Ministry urged members of the public and the media to rely on official government channels for information concerning the operations of South Sudanese diplomatic missions abroad.

In April, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said the government was planning to expand its diplomatic presence by establishing new embassies in several countries, despite financial pressures.

The Ministry’s latest statement did not provide further details about the nature of the technical issue affecting the Nairobi mission or when normal operations would be fully restored.
