Kenya’s opposition coalition said it’s resuming anti-government protests from May 2, nearly a month after suspending the rallies in anticipation of dialogue with the government.

“We will resume rallies from May 2, the demonstrations will be limited to Nairobi,” Dennis Onyango, the Spokesperson for veteran politician Raila Odinga told French news agency AFP.

In Nairobi, local media reported that police dispersed protestors who had temporarily blocked a section of Mombasa Road early Tuesday.

According to Nation newspaper, police officers are seen preparing to quell the protest and distributing teargas and canisters. But the capital is reportedly calm and most shops are open.

President William Ruto has strongly objected to the demonstrations saying he will not allow chaos and destruction of properties.

“I am the commander-in-chief and there will be no demonstrations to cause chaos, destroy property, and disrupt learning,” he said according to DW.

Despite the warning, Odinga insisted that the protests will go ahead and that no property would be destroyed.
