Juba residents urged to dig latrines

As South Sudan joins the rest of the world in celebrating World Toilet Day, the Juba city council is urging the public to build and take care of toilets.

Many homes in the city do not have latrines, according to health officials.

The World Toilet Day is meant to raise awareness on the importance of toilets.

The theme for this year is ‘Equality and dignity.’

The Public Health Officer of Juba City Council, Suzan Jubara, says people should dig latrines to avoid spread of diseases caused pen disposal of human waste.

“If you don’t have toilet, start thinking how to build and dig one in your house. If you can’t afford ask people so that they can help you in digging it,” Ms Jubara appealed.

“Call your neighboring youth to help. Get them food so that they have power to dig for your latrine and go look how you can cover it.

Ms Jabara said that the municipality has laws that punish people who urinating and defecate in public places.

She said there is need to focus on awareness and health education to the public to maintain a healthy environment.
